Job Interview in Portuguese: Key Phrases and Tips
Hi, I'm Poly. Today we're getting your Portuguese interview ready.
You have a job interview in Portuguese coming up! If you've learned the language mostly by reading or listening, you already understand a lot.
Now it's time to let that knowledge come out smoothly when you speak. Preparing well improves your answers, and it shows you care about the role and the company's culture.
Three tips to walk in with confidence
- Practice your introduction with the right pronunciation. Prepare a short answer to "Fale um pouco sobre você" (tell me a bit about yourself) and say it out loud. For example: "Trabalho há cinco anos na área de vendas e gosto muito de lidar com clientes." (I've worked in sales for five years and really enjoy dealing with clients.)
- Lean on reliable phrases. Build your answers around expressions like "Tenho experiência em…" (I have experience in…), "Fui responsável por…" (I was responsible for…) and "Consegui melhorar…" (I managed to improve…).
- Have phrases to buy time and close strong. "Boa pergunta, deixa eu pensar" (good question, let me think), "Poderia repetir, por favor?" (could you repeat that, please?) and, at the end, "Quais são os próximos passos do processo?" (what are the next steps?) show interest and ease.
A language with its own music
Portuguese has nasal sounds, open vowels and everyday expressions that really come alive when you speak them. It's a beautiful language to say out loud!
Here's the thing: podcasts and TV shows train your ear. Cooking dinner? Play a Brazilian show and repeat lines you like. Add someone who practices with you and gives feedback, and the details start falling into place.
In a one-on-one class, a tutor can run a mock interview, help you polish the little habits worth smoothing out, and give you the vocabulary of your field. That's how you go from understanding a lot to expressing yourself naturally.

I'm off for a stroll, but first, a parrot tip: didn't catch something? Ask them to repeat it. Parrots do it all the time.
