How to Stop Being Afraid to Speak Portuguese From Day One
Hi, I'm Poly, and today we're diving into Portuguese. Olá! I just love the way it sounds.
Have you noticed that Portuguese often looks friendlier than it sounds? If you know some Spanish, or even just plenty of English words with Latin roots, you can read a surprising amount from the start. That's a lovely head start!
Then you try to speak, the sounds come out a little different, and the fear of sounding awkward kicks in. Don't worry. It's worth working on early, so that familiarity keeps working in your favor.
Three tips to start speaking
Here's what helps the most:
- Use what you know, and keep an eye out for false friends. "Puxar" means to pull, not to push, "pretender" means to intend, and "livraria" is a bookstore, not a library. Mixing one up is part of the process and usually ends in a shared laugh.
- Focus on sound as well as words. Nasal vowels like in "pão" or "não" are what make Portuguese feel new at first. Repeat short phrases out loud, as if you were rehearsing a line in a play.
- Allow yourself an imperfect mix. Getting your message across with a few borrowed words already counts as speaking. With practice, real Portuguese gradually takes over.
Listen to how it really sounds
And here's what changes everything: thinking straight in Portuguese and listening to how it actually sounds. Doing the dishes? Put on some Brazilian music. Commuting? Try a podcast. Got friends who speak it? Notice how they chat in everyday conversation.
In a one-on-one class, your tutor notices on the spot when a false friend slips in and helps you fine-tune that nasal vowel. They also give you a comfortable space to get things wrong.
Honestly, that's how learning Portuguese online with someone becomes faster, and a lot more fun.

I'm off to practice my nasal vowels, because a parrot never stops rehearsing. Here's my parrot tip: imitating is learning too, so repeat out loud anything that sounds lovely to you.
